The Proper Use of Storage Facilities

The Do's And Don't Of Hiring Local Movers

by Sofia Martin

Do you need to hire professional local movers? Is this your first time moving or hiring a contractor to help you with this job? Before you agree to an estimate, take a look at the dos and don'ts of choosing a moving company.

Do Ask About Specific Services

Will you need a general mover that offers basic transportation services or do you need something more? Whether you need a full-service move, a contractor who specializes in moving customers with apartments or smaller townhomes, or another more specific option, make sure the company provides everything you need. If the contractor doesn't have verifiable experience in the type of move you need, continue your search.

Don't Choose the First Mover

More specifically, don't choose the first mover right away. Even though the first company that you call may end up having the best price or may offer the perfect services to fit your move, you should explore your options. This allows you to compare overall costs with the services each contractor offers. The lowest price may seem like the best way to go. But the reduced cost could mean that you will sacrifice extra services or quality.

There's no magic number of movers to interview before you choose one. But you could get a decent picture of the price points and services in your area with three different estimates. If there is a wide gap between all three, you may want to add in a fourth before you choose a finalist.

Do Ask About Scheduling

The availability of appointments is just as important as the services the company offers—especially if you're on a tight schedule, have to book transportation to your new home, or will start a new job immediately after you move.

Mondays through Thursdays are usually the least busy moving days of the week, according to the National Association of Realtors Moving.com website. This means Friday and weekend moves are harder to schedule. If you need to move over the weekend, book your move as soon as you choose a mover.

Don't Count Out Creativity

That is, don't count out your creativity. What happens when the perfect moving contractor has no weekend appointments in the weeks or even months surrounding your projected move date? Instead of moving on to the second or third choice contractor, get creative.

If you truly feel that your top pick is the best moving professional for the job, explore options such as an early-morning or later-in-the-day move. The local moving company may have openings during typically inconvenient times. Even though this isn't ideal, the creative workaround can get you the best company for the job on the best day of the week.
